Technology is great, right?  We can connect to anyone across the globe.  We can deliver presents to our friends in Thailand, Russia, or Costa Rica, regardless of whether we speak the language.  We can Skype from the remote island we visit on our honeymoon or for a vacation.  We can share our innermost thoughts and feelings with the world through our blogs.  It’s pretty incredible.

And yet, when technology fails, it fails big.  When Apple did something wonky in January, we all felt it.  From thousands of undelivered text messages, to people losing ALL OF THEIR PHOTOS, many of us wondered if we should just move back to the cave we came from and hurl our iPhone through a window.

For me, the scariest technology fail came last week when I tried to post my first post in a while, only to find that my server deleted ALL OF THE POSTS I wrote since August!  I had of course kept copies on my computer, but stupidly don’t keep a copy of the links and pictures I use.  And of course the server deleted all of the images, gifs and most importantly the locations I found them.

I was in a panic.

After a couple hours of reading through useless WordPress forum threads on losing everything – they just used techy slang instead of using the actual words for things, which are already hard enough for people like me to decipher.  I tried deleting all of my plugins, add-ons, and what-not, to no avail!  I finally called my website provider and they told me that they didn’t see any problems on their end, but that they’d be happy to show me how to back up my files.  Thankfully, it worked, although if I had waited another month, all of my info would be GONE FOR GOOD!  Scary!!!  And when I asked them about why it happened, they said that they were in fact having problems with that server, didn’t I get the email?  Um, no!!!

The incident served as a reminder that technology can be a great way to connect us, to simplify things like taking pictures or saving things in our homes, but it can also BE THE DEVIL!  And that there’s no way of knowing when we’ll be hacked, when a server will crash and delete all of our thoughts on Hipsters!!!  So beware, backup often, and have a secondary backup plan in case the original backup fails you!

Love,

Mirabelle

  1. The fear of losing ALL MY PHOTOS has kept me from installing the latest update for my phone… Pathetic, but true. I’m glad you were able to find a way to save all your thoughts on hipsters!

  2. Losing all your photos is the worst, Kathleen! I’m glad that you were smart and didn’t update yet!
